Independent Filmmaking

So, why choose to study independent filmmaking with Futureworks?

Our BA (Hons) Independent Filmmaking degree is not just another filmmaking course. It’s a unique opportunity for budding filmmakers to unlock their full creative potential. You’ll learn from the best in the industry, using the latest, industry-standard equipment and software, all in our state-of-the-art studio facilities close to Manchester’s Media City and our Riverside Campus. This is not just a degree, it’s a launchpad for a career in film.

We focus on the real world of filmmaking. Our impressive Media City studio space can be adapted for any aspect of filmmaking; the possibilities are endless; from a regular film studio to a complex film set, the only limit is your ambition. We also host one of the largest green screens in northern England. It’s a space limited only by your imagination, where you can bring creative visions to life in collaboration with incredible software, equipment, and facilities that aim to match what you would find in a commercial film studio. In fact, our green screen is often used by TV and film companies, which can provide essential, hands-on industry experience for students.

You’ll be taught by our highly enthusiastic and experienced tutors – all industry professionals with a raft of big-name film credits, insider knowledge and technical prowess. Our tutors want to see you succeed in your degree and film career as much as you do, and they provide a nurturing, caring, professional environment that has helped produce some of the UK’s most talented film industry professionals. But it’s not only our tutors that support your studies; fellow students from other courses are also encouraged to creatively collaborate with you, and vice-versa. Futureworks is a microcosm of the film industry with students studying VFX, editing, sound, animation, and more – all a budding independent filmmaker needs to realise their vision.

A prime example of creative collaboration in action is the film, Bound. Written and directed by Futureworks Independent Filmmaking student Ciaran Clancy. The behind-the-scenes video, below, will give you an insight into the attention to detail and the people, professionalism and passion that goes into our students’ films.

The trailer also gives you a sneak-peek into what to expect in the final film.
