As a provider of higher education, Futureworks is required to comply with a variety of external data requirements such as the National Student Survey. You can see what happens to your data, below.

Destination of Leavers for Higher Education (DLHE)

The DLHE is part of the Government’s drive to widen access and participation in higher education by providing students with accurate information on available courses, allowing them to make more informed choices about their education. The DLHE survey asks leavers from higher education what they are doing six months after graduation. About three quarters of leavers complete the survey. Some published statistics are restricted to certain types of leaver such as first degree (bachelors level) graduates or leavers who studied full-time.

The survey has been designed by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), which is the official agency for the collection, analysis and dissemination of quantitative information about higher education in the UK. Each institution is required to collect data from 80% of their UK, EU and (from 2012) International undergraduates and postgraduates.

Subjects included in the survey are: employment circumstances six months after graduation (e.g. work, further study, travel, unemployment etc.), occupation, industry, salary, reasons for taking the job, how they found out about the job, questions about further study, and more.

National Student Survey (NSS)

The NSS has two predominant aims; to provide prospective students with information about their chosen courses, and to act as a key driver for improving the student experience by identifying areas for change.

The NSS is part of the Government’s drive to widen access and participation in higher education by providing students with accurate information on available courses, allowing them to make more informed choices about their education.

The NSS is an annual survey open to all full time final year undergraduate students and part time students in their fourth year of a higher education course.

It asks participants how satisfied they are about the level of academic quality in their student experience. Within 22 questions, students are asked to rate their feelings about the following areas on a scale of 1 to 5:

  • Teaching quality
  • Academic support
  • Assessment and feedback
  • Organisation and management
  • Learning resources
  • Personal development
  • Overall satisfaction with their course

The survey is conducted by Ipsos-MORI, an independent organisation, which was commissioned by the Higher Education Funding council for England (HEFCE) to carry out the survey and aggregate the results.

Detailed results are passed on to institutions and students’ unions, and summaries of results are also displayed online (www.unistats.com) to help inform prospective students deciding on where and what to study.

The results of the NSS are taken seriously by Futureworks and viewed as a positive form of student feedback. As such, they are used to inform the changes and improvements made in future academic years. Student feedback is regularly sought with a view to making improvements within policies and procedures.

Key Information Set (KIS)

The KIS is part of the Government’s drive to widen access and participation in higher education by providing students with accurate information on available courses, allowing them to make more informed choices about their education.

The KIS comprises the items of information which students have said they find most useful when making choices about which course to study. Some of the items are measures of student satisfaction from the NSS, which is completed by more than 220,000 mainly final year students in the UK each year.

Some of the items are from the DLHE which surveys students who gained a qualification from a university or college, six months after they left. The DLHE survey asks whether they are employed, studying, both or, neither. In the KIS these results are combined with the results of a similar survey, the Long DLHE, which surveys a sample of those who responded to the DLHE, 40 months after they left university or college. The KIS also contains some information provided by universities and colleges.

The KIS covers the following areas:

  • Student satisfaction: This section covers student satisfaction with various aspects of the course. It is taken from the National Student Survey, which includes questions about teaching, assessment and feedback, learning resources, academic support, personal development and programme organisation.
  • Graduate employment: This section gives information about what people on this course do after they graduate, and average salaries after six months.
  • Finances: This section is an overview of financial information including the tuition fee for the course and the average cost of accommodation.
  • Learning and assessment: This section is a snapshot of some fairly complex data relating to how much time students spend on different types of learning and the proportion of different types of assessment which they experience in each Stage (year) of the programme.
  • Students’ Union: This section states what percentage of students view the Students’ Union positively. This is also taken from the National Student Survey.

Alternative Provider Student Record

In general, the AP student record is submitted to support two functions. The primary function of the record is to support course designation and the data returned includes all students on designated courses. In practice this requires Futureworks to send data for all full-time and part-time undergraduate designated courses. First year and continuing students domiciled in the UK, EU and other overseas countries on these courses must be reported.

The second function of the AP student record is to collect data for publication on UNISTATS to aid prospective higher education students in making a decision about what and where to study.

The AP student record is collected by HESA on behalf of the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS). Alternative providers whose activities are carried on, or principally carried on, in England and who have designated courses and are completing a Higher Education in Alternative Providers Early Statistics (HEAPES) survey are required to submit the ‘Course Designation’ element of the AP student record to HESA.

This information is necessary to assist BIS with the performance of its functions relating to higher education, including the provision of student support, and to facilitate compliance with the Department’s Public Sector Equality Duty.
